What is a hook-and-loop system?

HOOK AND LOOP BACKING PLATES

Q. What is hook and loop?

balcking plate hook and loop
A:
It is the method or system by which foam pads with a soft backing attach themselves to the backing plate. hook-and-loop fasteners. A hook-and-loop system consists of two layers: a "hook" side, which is a piece of fabric covered with tiny hooks, and a "loop" side, which is covered with even smaller and "hairier" loops. When the two sides are pressed together, the hooks catch in the loops and hold the pieces together. When the layers are separated, the strips make a characteristic "ripping" sound.

Q. Which backing plate do I need for my machine?

A.   Chemical Guys offers a huge selection of backing plates for most machines! The two most common used machines are  either rotary or dual-action, orbital and circular polisher.

Chemical Guys offer a range of sizes for both DA-Porter Cable, orbital dual actions and circulars high speek polishers so be sure to get the ones thatís are  appropriate for your machine.

DA-Dual Action Polishers use a:(5/16" x 24) (fits DA PORTER CABLES AND RANDOM ORBITAL BUFFERS)

Rotary Polishers use a:  5/8" diameter shaft.

Tip * Keep in mind that the smaller plates and pads allow for easy access to tighter areas; the larger ones cover more surface area faster. balcking plate hook and loop

Q. Are there different qualities of backing plates?

A. Yes, a wide variety of venders offer a cheep backing plate.  Backing plate qualities very greatly. Some backing plates are soft allowing them to bend and adjust to surfaces.

Unlike cheaper versions, Chemical Guys Manufacture backing plates will not transfer heat. They are specially built without any ventilation holes. Your pad will not get hot.

Chemical Guys also manufactures a new  full line of  flexible backing plates launching supper 2010.These backing plates are already currently used by our OEM clients overseas.

Q. What is a good Screw, and how does it work with my backing plate?

A. the GOOD SCREW enables you to use your standard Rotary backing plate with wither your DA-Dual Action polisher or your drill without the need of buying a new backing plate.

Chemical Guys has 2 kinds of screws one for the DA and one for the Drill.

Q. There are different buffers in use, what are they?

High Speed Buffer hitachi bugger polisher chemical guys

There are several types of buffers popular today with the professional detailer. The first is the rotary high-speed buffer. Ranging from below 1000 RPMs to 3000 RPMs, most have a variable trigger device in order to regulate speed. This is the most popular machine of any shop, but care must be taken in order to prevent too much friction and ďburn ď the paint. This machine requires skill to operate, but once the operator becomes proficient, it is a very effective and time saving tool. The most common attachment for this machine is the hook & loop backing plate, this accommodates our grip buffing pads. Secondary attachment system is the old style connection device: the bolt on rubber plate.

Random Orbit Buffer porter cable random orbital polisher

The next machine used in the reconditioning process is the random orbital machine. RPM ranges vary, but this machine creates a movement like a planet on a lopsided orbit. The movement does not build up as much heat like a rotary buffer so itís safe in the hands of a beginner. However, it canít replace the high-speed buffer because it canít cut as aggressively. Random orbitalís are commonly used with smaller foam pads during the finishing stage.

Professional Gear Driven Buffer

The orbital rotation of this innovative polisher simulates the circular movement of the human hand while polishing. At the same time, the polisher's highly smooth running facilitates a careful, precise finish andFlex Buffer professional polisher even offers what is necessary for hologram-free polishing. That's just what this polisher, with its ergonomically designed knob handle, was made for. The positive drive ensures a uniform movement, even under load, thanks to constant lift. Taken in conjunction with the large stroke length there is also the possibility of removing existing holograms from black finishes. Thanks to the direct orbital drive, very little heat develops on the surface, which is ideally suited to temperature-sensitive finishes. The accelerator trigger switch and speed selection allow for a controlled acceleration to the optimal speed. Note: the machine's orbital movement has been optimally adapted for the special back pad included with it.

Q. Why is a hook & loop system the best way to buff?

A.
Itís the most convenient and economical attachment system on the market today. With a hook & loop system you can change from one pad to another in seconds; coupled with our patented Self Centered System you can change and center the pad quickly. The reusable hook & loop backing plate is the most widely used method for attaching buffing pads. The backing plate to buffing pad hook & loop system allows you to work closer to the buffing surface than any other method, thus a smoother buff and better results.
